Jess Update (II)

Wednesday 10 November 2004 Hello!  Welcome to my 2nd Update.  Today I am exactly 11 weeks old. I realise it’s been a few weeks since I last wrote so I’ve got a lot to tell you, but before I get into tales of my growing and learning, there are a few birthdays I’d like to mention:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, GRAND-ANNETTE! (for 16 October)
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, GRANDPA!  (for 20 October)
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, GRANDDAD!  (for 28 October)
and…
HAPPY 8th BIRTHDAY, PAIGE! (for 28 November)
I was fortunate enough to see Grand-Annette and Granddad close to their birthdays because they came up to the Central Coast on Sunday 24 October to have lunch with me, Alex, Daddy & Mummy.
Actually, I was a little out of sorts that day, and as it turns out I had a very good reason.  I had a nasty ear infection in each ear!  I had had a few snuffles, but my parents just thought I had a little cold, so it wasn’t until the following Friday that I was taken to the doctor.  After a short course of antibiotics, however, I was feeling much better and back to my usual cheerful, easy-going self.  And back to sleeping right through the night!  (Yes, I’m a very good baby – still – and sleep somewhere between 10 and 12 hours each and every night!!!)
I had to go back to see the doctor last Friday just to make sure I had made a full recovery, and while I was there I got my first lot of immunisations.  I was very brave and only gave a little cry after each of the two needles, but then I was a bit unsettled again over the weekend and I had a nasty big lump on my leg where one of the needles went in.
I now do LOTS of smiling, and in fact just today my Mummy thinks she actually heard me giggle.  I’ve been threatening to giggle for a week or so now, but today the little sound I let out was more than just a gurgle while I was smiling – it was a real giggle.  Very cute, too, if I do say so myself.
So apart from charming people with my radiant smile, I also enjoy making eye contact and gurgling.  I also am taking much more of an interest in what’s going on around me, and if there’s any action going on while I’m supposed to be eating – forget it!
Just yesterday Mum discovered that I enjoy spending some awake time on my tummy.  I hadn’t spent any time on the floor before yesterday because my parents were always a bit concerned about my stampeding sibling, but yesterday at Mothers Group I was put on my tummy and immediately did a little push-up and spent a few minutes looking around at all the other babies.  I was very tired afterwards, but I was so proud of myself!  Today I had another little session on my tummy, and this time I had to pose for the camera (surprise, surprise…).
I think I’m starting to be aware that I have some connection to those floppy, wave-y things that hit me in the face from time to time.  My Mum and Dad refer to them as "arms" and "hands", but so far they’ve just been fairly annoying things which give me a little scare whenever they land on my face.  I think, however, that one day soon I might have a degree of control over them.  I hope so, anyway, because those things called ‘hands’ sure are fascinating… and tasty.
I’ve been down to Sydney to visit (Great-Grandma) Doffy, and Grandma has been down from Brisbane to visit me.  Granddad & Nanna have made a couple of trips up from Sydney to see me, and Soss is coming down from Brisbane next week to spend a few days at my house – yay!  I’ve not seen Soss since I was a few days old.  My second-cousins, Melanie & Matt, are coming up to visit me on Saturday, too.
Speaking of second cousins… three of them are pregnant!  Which I think is very considerate of them because it means I’ll have some playmates about my own age.  Maybe by my next Update one or even two of my new playmates (ie, third cousins) will have made their appearance…
Mum and I have been going each week to Mothers Group.  I’m the youngest in our group, and one of the only girls – there are about four times as many boys as girls.  I’m not really aware of all the other babies there yet, but I’m looking forward to having friends of my own age to play with when I get a bit older.
My big brother, Alex, has continued to be really nice to me.  He loves to cuddle me and give me kisses, and he’s very good at keeping me entertained when I’m getting a bit fussy and fidgety; he brings me toys and pats my tummy and strokes my arm.  What a lovely big brother I have!
And that’s about it from me for now.  I hope you’re all well and I look forward to hearing from you when you get a chance to write, and I’ll certainly keep you Updated from this end.
Lots of love & smiles (and giggles, too!) from
BabyJess  xxx
