Alex Update (LXV)

Friday 06 May 2005 Hello, and welcome to my 65th Update!  TODAY I AM EXACTLY 3 YEARS OLD!!!Harpy borfday to me Harpy borfday to me Harpy borfday to Harpy borfday to me! Beep-beep… hee-yay! Beep-beep… hee-yay!Beep-beep… hee-yay!

My birthday celebrations have been great.  My good friend, Jonty, came to play yesterday and stay the night last night, so I began my birthday chatting to my friend in the pre-dawn.  After we finally managed to summon my parents at around 6am, I raced downstairs to find a fantastic ‘Thomas the Tank Engine’ birthday cake, including two carriages.  I think my Mum and clever Grandma stayed up last night working wonders with icing and food colouring.  (No wonder I was a bit hyped today!)  After a breakfast of champions (cake!), I opened some presents, took some calls, checked my emails (true!) and got ready for my big day.  Mummy, Daddy, Baby Jess, Grandma, Jonty and I went to Taronga Park Zoo in Sydney.  We had a fantabulous day seeing lots of animals including lions, tigers, elephants, giraffes, zebras, gorillas, chimpanzees, a black rhino, seals, bears, farm animals, a camel, antelope, alligators, koalas, various birds including flamingos, as well as a Tasmanian devil, but by far the most fun I had was when we stopped to look at the seals and Jonty and I saw a backhoe at work.  Luckily that was at lunchtime and so we stopped right next to where the backhoe was digging to eat our lunch.  It was all I could manage to chomp down a sandwich and I certainly didn’t see any seal tricks because my eyes were firmly fixed to the backhoe.  All during lunch I knelt religiously in front of the backhoe, worshipping its grace, ease and power.  It was awesome.  My parents were certainly very pleased that they’d paid the hefty zoo entrance fee so that Jonty and I could get up close and personal with the mighty backhoe.  I’ve got a great photo of it, if anyone would like to see it…?
Because I wasn’t going to be at Banzai Preschool on my birthday, I made and took along a birthday cake when I went on Wednesday.  I also took along some balloons and party blowers, so everyone in my room at preschool sang "Happy Birthday" to me and we had a really good fun day – with me being the centre of attention, of course!
Before I forget to give you my vital statistics, I was weighed and measured on 07 April 2005 and at that time I was 97 centimetres tall and weighed 15.5 kilograms.  I had to go to see a Dietician on that day because the range of foods I eat is still so limited.  The Dietician recommended that I have a blood test because she thought that I might be iron and/ or protein deficient, but I had the blood test almost a week ago and the results indicate that although I should start taking an iron supplement, there’s nothing too much to worry about.  I can sometimes now be convinced to eat a chicken nugget, so you can’t say that I never get any iron in my diet!!  Something else I’ve recently decided is pretty good is frozen bread.  Nothing on it, just plain frozen bread.  Each to their own, I say.
Now to fill you in on all the news since my last Update.
In the first week of April I really took to "working" on the computer.  I like to "write letters".  I can type "Alex" completely unassisted, and I try to write "Daddy" and "Mummy" and "Jess".  I know how to boot up the computer, turn the screen on (I’ve been doing those things for ages), but now I know how to go to my own log-in screen, double-click on the "text document" icon if I want to write letters, or double-click on the "paint" icon if I want to do some painting.  I also know what the backspace, enter and spacebar keys do.  I know that the mouse moves the cursor, I can click and double-click on icons/ text boxes.  I can manipulate the left, right, up & down arrow keys.  Computer literate as I am well on my way to becoming, I have had some computer related funnies.  Here’s my parents’ favourite:
23 April 2005
Daddy has taught me how to access and use a software program on the computer called ‘Paint’.  I sometimes enjoy using the ‘paintbrush’ and making coloured pictures on the computer screen.  After I’d done a particularly beautiful ‘painting’ on the screen, I asked Daddy, "Are there pegs in the computer, Daddy?"
Daddy said, "No, there are no pegs in the computer.  Why do you ask that?"
I said, "Because I need to hang my painting up so it can dry."
Since I’ve started you on my ‘funnies’, I’ve got a couple more that I’d like to share with you:
17 April 2005
Daddy was putting me to bed. After the stories had finished, but before bed, the two of us always have have a cuddle. There was some noise going on outside my window, and Daddy asked me to "Sshhh!" so he could hear was was going on.   I started rubbing and patting Daddy’s chest while saying, "That’s just the crickets, Daddy.  Don’t be scared of them.  They’re just little tiny crickets!  They won’t hurt you.  It’s OK, Daddy."
23 April 2005
Mummy asked Daddy to go across the road to the little shop to buy her some tofu.  While Daddy was gone, I asked Mummy, "Why your toes need food, Mummy?"
I’ve been doing the party circuit lately, as is my way in April and May.  On 09 April I went to Aoife’s birthday party, on 17 April I went to Jordan’s birthday party, on 30 April I went to Jonty’s birthday party, and tomorrow I’m going to Ethan’s birthday party.  Last Sunday (01 May 2005) I went down to Sydney for the "Doffy & the Greats" day in Fagan Park where I got to meet two of my newest third cousins, Alden Sommerfeld and Noah Keast.  So many parties, so little time…
I’ve been to First Wives’ Club (mothers group) a few times, and I’ve had a few friends over to play.  Jonty came over to play on 24 April, and he ended up staying the night, and when he went home the next day, he had a brand new baby sister called Elodie!  How exciting!  Then on 29 April my friend Amelia came and spent the day with me.  We baked muffins, played in the cubby house, read some stories and fought a lot.  I enjoyed myself, though.
Just the day after my last Update I went down to The Entrance and had my third haircut.  Mum’s getting much braver with the whole haircut thing now; she didn’t shed a tear this time, I don’t think!
Oh, and before I go, I really should tell you just how clever I am:
Two weeks ago (23 April 2005) my Daddy was wearing a particular shirt.  I looked at it and pointed to each letter as I read out, "C – A – N – A – D – A.  Canada!"
Okey-dokey.  It’s VERY late and my scribe is weary.  I hope everyone is happy and healthy.  I look forward to Updating you some more in my fourth year…
Much love from
Alex (aka BIRTHDAY BOY!)
